Step 1: Wash the body, inside and out, with hot water and SEM soap part #39362.
Step 2: Using a gray scruff pad (3M part #7448) clean the body with SEM brand plastic prep, part #38354. The scuff pad is only used for cleaning purposes, you should not sand the body. Sand scratches could show up in the final finish. Do 2' square areas wiping the plastic prep off before it has a chance to dry by itself.
Step 3: Repeat step 2.
Step 4: Spray the body with one light to medium coat of SEM flexible adhesion promoter part #39863. Let the adhesion promoter dry at least 15 minutes but no more than 30.
Step 5: Use a flexible primer of your choice it will take several coats to fill the pinholes in the body. The body is very porous.
Step 6: Use the topcoat of your choice. If you use an automotive finish, you must use a flexible additive in the paint. Ask your paint supplier for instructions to refinish flexible parts. The instructions may vary per paint brand.

Answer: This is true. In regards to more time, you will be given the remaining alignment time to reassemble.
Question: When using the optional tubular mount, if you are using two rear mounting plates there is not enough bolt length for a lock washer under the nut on top of the square tube mounts. Can we omit the lock washer?
Answer: You will have to draw the elevator bolts into the floorboard in order to get more threads. You cannot omit the lock washer.
Question: How do you appropriately put bondo onto the hatch?
Answer: You may bondo around the egdes of the hatch and body to get a good fit; you may add bondo to the back ends of the hatch is you have raised your helmet and headrest. You MAY NOT add bondo to the top of the hatch (the area in front of the foam) which would change the contour of the hatch. You MAY NOT add bondo in the hinge area to get your 36 1/2 girth measurement.
Question: What kind of wax is allowed to be used on the coated floorboards?
Answer: Butchers wax will work just fine.
Question: If there are a few scratches on the floorboard, am I permitted to touch them up?
Answer: You cannot apply any finish to the scatches in order to touch up the floorboard. If you have scatches, you can use water mix wood putty to fill them. You can wax the putty.
Question: If my floorboard doesn't have the date stamping on it as seen on stock and super stock floorboards, was this an oversight or do they not date the masters floorboard?
Answer: You may just have a board that they missed when applying the date stamps.
Question: What is the approximate shipping weight of a masters car with wheels?
Answer: 95 Pounds.
Question: Can elevator bolts be trimmed down to the nuts?
Answer: You can trim the elevator bolts and smooth any sharp edges.
Question: Is there a specific location for the adjustable 6" weight bolts?
Answer: There are two locations suggested in the scottie plans; under the headrest and between the front assembly and steering wheel. You may mount one in front of the front axle, but you will have to make a front access hole for easy adjustment of weight rather than taking the shell on and off.
Question: I am converting to the PVC adjuster assembly. The shell has already been slotted for the old assembly but when using the new assembly, the cables do not match the slot. What can I do with the old slots?
Answer: You can tape the old slots or cover with a vinal decoration.
Question: After assembling, it was brought to my attention that the floorboard was upside down. Can I leave it this way?
Answer: You will encounter more problems if you leave the floorboard turned over. The bushing would not fit.
Question: While routing out a seat area on the floorboard, the router malfunctioned and gouged out a part of the seat area beyond the 3/4" limit. What can I do to fix this?
Answer: You can use a water base wood filler to fill the gouge, but only in that area so that we know what the problem was.
Question: When moving the steering assembly forward to accommodate a larger driver, the steering is directly above the previous brake shaft hole. What would be the correct method to repair the hole so that the steering has a base?
Answer: You can plug the old brake shaft hole, you can plug it with a wooden dowel. You will want to wipe off any excess epoxy from the top or bottom of the board. Any other holes can only be covered on the bottom of the board with clear tape.
Question: For a larger driver whose feet are beyond the axle, is there any type of bridge to cover the axle so that their feet dont interfere?
Answer: Most people bend a piece of metal to make a bridge over the axle. You can use either the front two or rear two bolts of the front mounting plate to secure it. If you use this method, cut a hole in it so that the kingpin assembly can be viewed without removing it the bridge.
Question: We have had some problems with the PVC Cable Adjusters sliding. Is there any way to prevent the sliding?
Answer: We want the adjusters to slide. You are not to add cable clamps to each side of the adjuster. If the cable adjuster did not slide, it could catch on pants, shorts, or weights. That would cause the driver to
Question: Can the drivers helmet be covered in the wrap?
Answer: You cannot wrap the helmet at the championship race in July. You can address that idea with the director if needed for a local race.
Question: Can the hatch foam be wrapped, painted or dyed to blend with the color scheme of the car?
Answer: You cannot wrap or paint the foam, you can dye it.
Question: Can the edges on the axle openings and bottom of the shell be covered as well with a wrap?
Answer: You will need to cut the wrap at all edges other than the hatch and the headrest. You can roll it around the edges of the hatch opening, hatch and the edge of the headrest.
Question: Rear washer stacks - it is my understanding that a 3.5" king pin is used that between the top plate and the bottom of the axle any combination of R, R1, and N washers can be used and on top of the axle a R or R1 can be used as long an N washer is placed on the top and a lock nut is fully threaded. Is this correct?
Answer: Using a 3.5" kingpin, you can use any combination of washers on the top and between the plate and the axle that you desire as long as you have a fully threaded nut on top. It is also ok to use just a nut on top of the axle without any washers between nut and axle.
Question: On the masters helmet rest area, I understand that there is suppose to be 7" clear between the sides of the shell from the first rivet to the hatch. In the past and currently, if I understand correctly, it has been acceptable to have a small buildup of bondo below the top of the shell in this area and under the helmet to allow helmet to sit on that would make the space less that 7" wide in this area. Is my understanding correct? If not please clarify.
Answer: From the first rivet forward you can only have foam inside the 7" area to support the helmet. From the first rivet back you can have a buildup of bondo in the 7" area to support the helmet.
Question: I used a 5/16" bolt instead of a 1/4" bolt through the wooden horseshoe for the helmet adjuster, is this ok? Also is there any specific nut, washer, wingnut combination for this that must be used?
Answer: It is ok to leave the 5/16" bolt in the helmet adjuster, as for nuts & washers just stick with only what would be required and a wingnut for adjusting it would be Ok but should be replaced with a regular nut after you have your angle set.
Question: One of our master division racers is struggling to get to maximum tail weight. In the build instructions for the stock and super stock divisions, the weight location is very explicit. The masters division is more flexible. Is it acceptable to locate small triangular shaped weight with a 5/16" bolt behind the rear axle as long as the 1/8" clearance is maintained between the weights, shell and rear axle plate?
Answer: Weight in the tail is permitted following the 1/8 inch clearance. Take care to be sure it does not angle out over the rear assembly. The weight must be mounted to the floorboard. You may also mount a T-nut in the bottom of the floorboard for a 5/16 threaded rod .
Question: On the Masters car rear adjustable weight bolt is it acceptable to substitute a t-nut on the bottom of the floorboard and bolts cut to several different lengths. I am concerned about the bolt sticking up positioned at the base of the drivers head and am willing to give up some weight flexibility to be a little more safe.
Answer: Yes, a t-nut is acceptable on the bottom of the floorboard. Be sure to use 5/16 bolts. Thanks for thinking of your child's safety. One could also fill the unused length of bolt with light-weight wood blocks to the top of the bolt.
Question: Which rivet to use? The position of the rivets is different from the right side to the left side of the helmet. The rivet on the right side of the helmet is lower and closer to the back of the helmet. In order to meet the "line of sight" rule about the first rivet being the highest point which rivet should be used? How much of the rivet counts? When the the "line of sight" rule states that the rivet must be the highest point, does it mean that any part of either rivet must be the highest point or 100% of both rivets must be above the highest point or 100% of one rivet and at least part of the other rivet must be the highest point?
Answer: We understand that racers have become overly concerned over this measurement since a new simple accurate measurement tool has been designed.
As you point out, the location of the rivets are not perfect on the helmets.
Use one of the front rivets for your measurement, you can take the one that is further back and highest on the helmet, then measure from the center of the rivet. It should be at or above the highest part of the car.
Unless you are using a helmet that had the rivets placed in a very abnormal position you should be fine; again, if the helmet looks unusual check it against others.
Question: Can tape be used to assist in holding the hatch shut?
Answer: No tape should not be used , try velcro or small magnets on the underside of the hatch and body where the hatch rests.
Question: Can tape be used to cover up the axle holes cut into the body, front and rear?
Answer: No tape on the axel holes. No tape also on the foam on the hatch (overlapping the foam & hatch) You can tape an access hole on the top of the car . Clear tape allowed on any UNUSED holes on the bottom of the floorboard. If you have cut indentations in your airfoils for your cable attachment you can cover those with tape.
Question: When painting the body, can the hatch hinge and it's screws/bolts be painted also?
Answer: No do not paint or clearcoat the hinge or screws. If you filled the indentation for the hinge with bondo and filled in around the hinge with bondo be sure to clear any away from the edge of the hinge so that it is visible. We want to see and feel the edge of the hinge.
Question: Last year, my daughter raced in the Masters Division. This year, she cannot fit her shoulders in the car. I was told that possibly, the shell can be cut and 'shoulder blisters' can be made with fiberglass. Can you please let me know is this is permitted and if there are any rules / guidelines?
Answer: Sorry but shoulder blisters are not permitted.
Question: Can you use four pulleys on the steering?
Answer: You can still use more then two pulleys. The cable must exit the car from the two predrilled locations though. Next year (2009) you must use the method shown by diagram 6.3 in the plans
Question: In mounting the Steering brake assembly and axel plates can the builder use R washers at the top of the mounting plates in lieu of the N washers shown in the build instructions... The use of R washers just appears to be more substantial.
Answer: Do not change from what is shown in your plans; use the N washers. There are no N washers on the mounting plates for the axles, only lock washes. You may change the washers on the front of the front axle plate if you are using those two bolts for axle stops.
Question: The masters division used to have a rule that stated that the lowest point on the floorboard could be no lower than than 3 and 1/16" from the ground. As I read the the rule book, I could not find any reference to that rule. Is that rule now enforce through the statement that the washer stack of choice may be used however the standard 3 1/2" kingpin must be through or flush with the top lock nut.
Answer: Yes the ground clearance is controlled by the kingpins and washer stack and the nut being flush with the kingpins. DO NOT attempt to get a lower clearance by changing the depth of the kingpin counter sinks on the bottom of the floorboard, it will be checked.
Question: In the masters division rules under axle prebowing it states that the axles may have a maximum 1/8" arch under full load (car and driver). As I read this rule I am interpreting this rule to say that when the axles are fully loaded they are allowed to have a maximum 1/8" arch in the vertical dimension remaining, not that the maximum allowable arch is 1/8" before loading the car thus producing a flat axle under load. Is that the correct interpretation?
Answer: You may have an 1/8 inch vertical prebow when loaded (driver & car) which means it would probably be more then 1/8 inch unloaded. The intent of prebowing is to run with a loaded axle which flat. You are not permitted to prebow in the horizontal position either to the front of the car or to the rear.
Question: The dimensions for the headrest are a bit confusing and I would like to have a clarification please.
Answer: From the foam opening in the hatch, back to the front rivet of the helmet in racing position, you must have a 7 inch wide opening. Allowed in this area is the 3/8 foam on the sides of the hatch and more foam if you are using it to secure your helmet. No screws wood blocks bondo or anything else hard in this area.
If your helmet at the front rivet measures 7 1/4 on the outside edge at racing position, you will pass.
Quick measure mark the location of the rivet on the body and the edges of the helmet take your helmet out and measure. Or place a stick inside the helmet which will achieve a 7 1/4 measurement on the outside bottom edge at the rivet, if your helmet has trouble sliding in the headrest you are probably less then 7 1/4.
The method as stated earlier to avoid a problem was to notch the back opening where the back of the helmet rests when preparing to attach the headrest. That would allow the helmet to expand and not crush the width.
Question: Are you allowed to run a car with a "loose kingpin set up" (minimal torque on kingpins) as long as you have the proper/specified thread engagement on the kingpin nut, have to proper washer on top of the axles and at the bolt head/floor board interface and meet all other AASBD specifications?
Answer: There is no minimal torque on kingpins, you must have the proper/specified thread engagement on the kingpin nut (nuts).
your rear alignment bolts must be functional though.
Question: If a weigh is made of aluminum does it need to be painted?
Answer: The paint rule was originally intended for lead weights for safety, as it it too late to allow others to not paint their weight I would clearcoat it.
Question: The rear weight bolt has striped its locking feature in the floor board and turn when we are tightening down the weights. What is the acceptable method to repair the hole in the floor board? (can I use epoxy or wood filler to reform the square shank interface in the floorboard?)
Answer: You can use a water based wood putty or replace it with a T-nut on the bottom of the board then use a 5/16 threaded rod for your bolt.
Question: Is it ok to paint body screws and finish washers?
Answer: No. It is not okay; do not paint them or crush the washers when screwing them in.
Question: Is it permissible to machine a J1 washer to a lesser thickness and then use it in the axle/king pin washer stack (front and rear)? If it is permissible, is there a minimum thickness?
Answer: No, this is not allowed.
Question: Why did the Ultimate Speed Driver qualification requirement change for the 2007 Ultimate Speed Challenge?
Answer: Additional qualifications were needed for Ultimate Speed Team eligibility. As it stood, the only requirements were to pay the $200 registration fee, age, and for the driver to have participated one time in a Local or Rally Race held anywhere. It was felt that more should be required to justify participation in the premier annual All-American Race. Since the Ultimate Speed competition is particular to the Akron Hill and track specification, qualification elimination runs proved impractical to orchestrate.
It was decided that Ultimate Speed vehicles warrant premier drivers who have demonstrated qualifications of driving skills and experience appropriate to the challenges that racing Ultimate Speed cars may present. All-American Champions have demonstrated driving skills and are familiar with the Akron Hill's nuances. Their status is appropriate to the vision and effort associated with the Ultimate Speed Challenge and ensures the Derby a driver qualified to safely manage race conditions. Their eligibility to participate in the Ultimate Speed event is additionally a reward and acknowledgement of their achievement.
